FAQs
Do I need to see my doctor before starting any physio?
In general no, you do not need your doctor's consent to commence Chest physio. In a few cases I may need to speak with your doctor before starting your physio to obtain more information.
What shall I wear for my physio?
Loose fitting clothes, so that I may pass my stethoscope under your clothing to listen to your breathing. Maintaining your dignity is a top priority.
Can I have someone present during my physio sessions?
Yes, if this makes you feel more comfortable. It can also be beneficial as they can encourage you to do your physio between sessions, and help you remember any details you may forget. However I do ask that there are not too many people present as it can be quite distracting for both you and me.
How long will sessions last?
Due to covid the initial assessment needs to be done in two parts, each taking approximately one hour. The first part is done over the phone, as this when information about your condition, past medical history, medications, eating & drinking and your physical activity levels are recorded. The second part is done in person, when your breathing will be assessed and a treatment plan drawn up. Subsequent appointments are usually one hour depending on the treatment requirements.
How many treatment sessions will I require?
As everyone's condition is different there is no standard number of sessions. It will depend on your chest condition and your treatment needs.
What if I want to stop having physio?
You can stop having Chest physio whenever you want, and equally restart your chest physio whenever you wish. It is your chest and your body, so it is your choice.
Equally if you are not happy with something during a treatment session, you have the right to ask me to stop.
What if I smoke?
If you smoke, it will not affect how I treat you.
I will discuss with you the benefits of reducing / stopping smoking, but I am not here to lecture you. If you decide you want to give up smoking, I will assist you in this.
What if I have to cancel my appointment?
If you need to cancel / change your appointment I ask that you give a days' notice.
However I do appreciate that life events can change very quickly or you become suddenly unwell and therefore I ask me that you contact me as soon as possible.
Will I be charged if I cancel my appointment at short notice?
If you need to change / cancel at short notice on the rare occasion you will not be charged.
However if you do this on a regular basis you will be charged a treatment fee; you will be warned if this is going to happen.
What if my appointment is cancelled?
If I have to cancel your physio appointment, due to illness for example, I will arrange with you a new appointment with you there and then.
